Sitting barely cross-legged on two wood blocks, the air flow from the ceiling fan gently falls upon my yoga mat. The sounds of cattle mooing, children playing, and way too many scooter horns share the moment, but my attention is elsewhere. I’m focused, and with good purpose – Guru Vivek Ji is speaking:
“The Mind is the Fastest Moving Thing in the Universe”.
The pace of modern life is swift to say the least. Nowadays, it is common to hear talk about how hard it is to balance family life, work schedules, and social commitments, with personal time for self-care. But, there has to be a way, right?
Guru Vivek Ji, explained that only the mind can be in one place in one moment, and a totally different place in the next. In other words, only your mind can see the overflowing laundry basket in the trunk of your car in one moment, and then the list of upcoming assignments written in the notebook beside your laptop in the next. With all of these commitments and responsibilities, is it really possible to make time for yourself?
Make Time vs Take Time
The truth is, making time for yourself can be hard. After all, there are only 24 hours in a day. With that being said, there is a solution. The remedy lies within shifting your efforts from trying to make time, to learning to take time.
How Do You Take Time?
Meditation. A quick Google search can tell you that mediation is when an individual focuses their mind on a particular object, thought or activity, to clear their mind and calm their feelings and emotions. Instead of trying to make time for yourself, take time by changing parts of your daily routine into meditation. Brushing your teeth, walking from your front door to your car door, drinking your coffee…all of these activities can take the form of meditation.
By focusing the mind, moment to moment, instance to instance, you will shift your awareness away from dirty laundry and unfinished assignments while drinking your coffee, towards experiencing the smooth taste of each sip, the rich aroma that accompanies it, and the soothing warmth of the cup in between your hands. If you take a few minutes, at a few different times, in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening, you will have practiced that self-care you’ve had trouble making time for.
Although it may not be the all-inclusive, three day-weekend at the spa resort you were wishing for, 30-60 mins of meditation – even when broken into small intervals – will help clear your mind and calm your feelings and emotions. But, don’t trust me. Trust yourself, and TAKE TIME for meditation.

The Beatles Ashram (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi): If you are interested to see the place where Beatles, a famous band group of the 1960s had learned transcendental meditation, then come to Swargashram where the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi ashram now known as the Beatles Ashram is located. It is best to take a road that starts from Ram Jhula. You will find the iron gate of the ashram at the end of this very road. Though the ashram is closed now by the government of India, but its old buildings is narrating the story of Beatles journey of transformation and learning experience. Officially no one is allowed to enter the complex yet enthusiastic tourist’s do unofficially visit it and offer money as a token of gratitude and appreciation to the watchman of ashram. Sivananda Ashram: Sivananda Ashram was started by Swami Sivananda in early 1930’s and since then had been providing intense knowledge of yoga to the people through its organization, Divine Life Society. The Society was formed on the principles of purity, nobility, integrity and magnanimity in the year 1936. Ashram has different batches for men and women, morning for men and evening for women.
The Divine Life Society spreads the knowledge of yoga and spirituality through the regular publication of pamphlets, books, and magazines which give the knowledge of the different aspects of Yoga and Vedanta, universal religion and philosophy. Swami Sivananda promoted the idea that to become a member of the ashram, an aspirant yogi has to join the first three principles of the Yamas (moral principles as mentioned in Yoga Sutras of Sage Patanjali). Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan: As the sun sets thousands of people throng at Parmarth Niketan Ashram near river Ganga to witness the famous Ganga Aarti. It is a divine fire ceremony which is accompanied by the chanting of mantras, songs, prayer and rituals. In this ceremony, oil lamps are offered to mother Ganga. Witness Ganga Aarti is a very soothing and heartwarming, and it is a time when we break ourselves from the stresses and attain divine light in our life.
Parmarth Niketan Ashram was formed in 1942 by Pujya Swami Shukdevanandji Maharaj (1901–1965). Now the ashram has more than 1000 rooms in a clean, pure and sacred environment including beautiful gardens. In the ashram, people do yoga, preferably Vinyasa Yoga, Hatha yoga and yoga Nidra, universal prayers and meditation and listen to the Satsang and lecture programs. Besides natural cure and Ayurvedic treatment is also provided. Ashram also has 14 feet Shiva statue and the divine tree of heaven Kalpavriksha which was planted by Vijaypal Baghel of Himalaya Vahini.
Vashisht Cave: It is an ancient cave located towards the middle of a grove of Gular (Ficus) trees and slopes towards sacred river Ganga. Sage Vashishta who was one among the seven great sages of India (Saptrishis) and a teacher of Lord Rama is said to have meditated here for many years, making it one of the holiest places among Hindus. In 1930 Sri Swami Purushottamananda Ji is said to have visited the cave and established the ashram near it, and now the cave is being managed by the trust of Sri Swami Purushottamanandaj ji ashram. The cave is 60 feet deep and is naturally formed having Shiva Lingam inclined vertically towards its opening. To reach the cave, climb 200 steps, which becomes quite tiresome but at the same time mysterious and adventurous.
Ram Jhula: It is an iron suspension bridge over the river Ganga built with a span of 750 feet (230 m) connecting Sivananda ashram with Swargashram. It is bigger than Lakshman Jhula. Only a pedestrian bridge, it also provides panoramic view of river Ganga and Rishikesh city which throngs with temples. The bridge is located 3km towards the North East of Rishikesh. Built in the year 1986 it became one of the most iconic landmarks of Rishikesh.
Lakshman Jhula: It is an iron suspension bridge over the river Ganga and is located 5 km from the town of Rishikesh. The bridge was built by U.P.P.W.D. during 1927–1929 in place of the old bridge of 284 feet span which was washed away by the floods in 1924. The bridge was opened to traffic on April 11, 1930.The bridge connects the two villages; Tapovan in Tehri Garhwal district to Jonk in Pauri Garhwal district. It was believed that Lakshmana, brother of Lord Rama had crossed the river on jute ropes in the very place where this bridge is located now. The bridge spans 450 feet. No toll or tax is ever realized for crossing it.
Patna Waterfall: Patna Waterfall is 7 km from Lakshman Jhula on the Neelkanth Temple road. The waterfall is named after the small village where it is located and is accessible only with a 1.5 km tough trek. Though h water is less but the beauty of the place is enough to attract the tourists towards it. And to add to it there are some limestone caves near the falls, and the drops falling from the stones is a wonderful treat to the eyes.

Whether these are just folklores, myths, legends or history is a debate for some other day, but there is no denying the fact that Yagya was related to slaying negativity since the Vedic times. How it works
There are two basic energy systems in the physical world: heat and sound. In performing Yagya, these two energies, namely, the heat from Yagya’s fire and the sound of the chanting of the Gayatri and other Vedic Mantras, are blended together to achieve the desired physical, psychological and spiritual benefits.
The aroma of Yagya
The surroundings and the smell of a Yagya can be smelt even at a huge distance. In addition to steam, smoke is also given out in plentiful quantities and solid particles existing in a highly divided state offer adequate surface for mechanical diffusion. Thus smoke also functions as a medium for circulation of aromatic substances depending on temperature and direction of the wind.
The science behind using fatty substances (Ghee)
Ghee helps in rapid combustion of cellulose of wood and keeps the fire alight. When all the volatile substances are diffused in the surrounding atmosphere, these are further subjected to photochemical reactions in the sunlight. This may be the reason why it has been recommended that Yagya should be performed in the presence of strong sunlight.
The shape of the Agni Kunda
The word ‘pyramid’ means the fire in the middle’. This ancient-word meaning for pyramid is closely connected with the enigmatic energies springing from its central shape. The pyramid shape is generally thought to generate and store a special energy field, which possess bacteriostatic properties. The inverted pyramid shape allows controlled generation and multidirectional dissipation of energy. It acts as an initiator of unusual energy fields and spreads them in its surrounding atmosphere.
Chanting of Sanskrit
The power of sound vibrations is long since acknowledged in the field of science. These vibrations can penetrate the energy spheres at the subtle and cosmic levels. All the alphabets of the Sanskrit language are endowed with special vibrational powers, which set out harmonious wave patterns when pronounced. It is interesting to note that an American Scientist has established that recitation of Gayatri Mantra produces 110,000 sound waves per second.
Purification of environment
Till recently it was accepted that research into science can furnish answer to all of man’s problems. Today we find increasing number of diseases including malfunctioning of body organs due to increasing severity of pollution in the atmosphere. Experimental studies show that the incidence of physical ailments, sickness and disease are reduced in the houses, where the Yagya is regularly performed.
Spiritual significance of Yagya
The heat endowed in yagya is a source of immense energy. As this fire inflames, melts or sublimates all the gross substances inside, we too should burn out all our vices, ill-tendencies, lethargy, dullness and despair and energize our personality with the warmth of new zeal, alacrity, awareness and hope. The heat and energy of the yagya should be reflected in the active flow of our blood, our industriousness and our nimble and vigilant courage to fight against all evils.
The ash produced by fire reminds us of the ephemeral and transient nature of life. We tend to forget this eternal fact and continue on the path of cravings and attachments…adding to our mistakes, infirmities and sins too. While putting the Yagya – bhasm on our head after the Yagya, we should ponder over the end of our present life and realize the importance of the time and breaths available to us now.
