Yoga for Beginners – Everything You Need to Know Before You Start

admin

Yoga for Beginners – Everything You Need to Know Before You Start: In these days, Yoga is becoming more and more popular within modern society, people are becoming more aware of themselves and look for something that might help them to live longer and healthier life. Though, there is much more within the path of Yoga that is beyond what most of people think and put as their inspiration for their practice, like simply for creating more strength and flexibility in the physical body.

Yoga is a vast system of self-exploration that leads one towards a realization in order to create a reunion on every aspect of the being and to project this inspiration outwards in order to create a positive impact also on the environment.  Eventually, the ultimate goal is to reach enlightenment through the application of all the different elements, such as leading an ethical life, purifying the body and the mind, practicing the Yogic postures, using different breathing techniques, withdrawing the five senses internally, concentrating on one object at a time and meditation.

As a complete beginner, it would be better to avoid the strain of trying too hard to understand every detail on the first class, it is a long process that demands the investments of time and effort together. It is completely natural not to have the ability to perform from the beginning all the instructions by the Yoga teacher or the book you study. It is even very obvious that in Asana classes many beginner students would pay attention just for the physical movements that are seen only by the gross eyes, without paying attention to the internal events at all.

But the more all elements of Yoga is practiced, the deeper the practitioner will be able to dive internally and explore the subtler level of the being.

Nowadays, the Yoga community is growing larger and larger so it is usually easier to find a Yoga studio, school or Ashram in every populated area around the globe, especially in India. Even though it is just the beginning, it is extremely recommended to find a highly experienced teacher who has the awareness of leading a class in a professional and safe way that is intending to create a transformation within all aspects of life. Along with that, it is also important to pay attention more and more to yourself so you can your actions. For example, studying according to the capacity of the body and the mind and avoiding strain.

Eventually, the whole aim is to re-establish a conscious relationship between the body, mind and the higher self or the soul. It all come with patience and consistent practice; before reaching the deeper levels like dealing with emotional issues in order to create healing within the mental realm, it is likely that most of people will connect to the physical body first and get to explore areas where they were never mindful of before.

To conclude all that, it is important to say, the path of Yoga is a path of exploration, the only thing you have to do is just to start and reduce the expectations, it is like opening a gift box without realizing first what is inside. In this path, instead of only reaching a goal, you will learn also how to enjoy the journey.

How to choose best Yoga teacher training course

admin

So, you want to do your yoga teacher training and curious how to choose best yoga teacher training course for you? That is awesome! In my opinion, doing a yoga teacher training program, even if you never intend to teach a day in your life, is one of the most amazing, life-transforming things you can do for yourself.

That said, with so many options for trainings out there, how do you even begin to decide which program is right for you? How do you know if the one you are going to be investing a few thousand dollars and at least 200 hours of your time into is going to pay off for you?

If you are feeling confused about your options, this post is for you. I have created this checklist of considerations to help you narrow down your search for programs that best suit you and your life.

1. Make Sure Your Training is Yoga Alliance-Certified:

As the international governing body for yoga, the Yoga Alliance has set the standard for what a properly constructed teacher training program must contain.

If you hope to teach yoga at some point in your future, you want to ensure that the training you choose is Certified by the Yoga Alliance; otherwise, you will not qualify for insurance.

I know it does not feel all that yogic, but insurance is a part of the world we live in, and an important point to keep in mind while you are program shopping.

I am not saying that taking a training that is non-Yoga Alliance certified is a mistake—there is a plethora of good non-accredited trainings out there—just know that your chances of teaching and teaching safely may be diminished if you disregard this credential in your decision.

2. Choose Hours That Work for Your Life:

For some, totally checking out of their everyday life and going on a retreat-style yoga teacher training is far more effective for learning. For others, doing their training in their hometown on evenings and weekends works best.

You have to think this through before signing up for anything. If you know that life is going to distract you from your studies, you are most likely better off getting out and away.

If you know that you need time to go away and digest concepts, perhaps doing your teacher training course over a longer period of time, with breaks in between sessions, will serve you better.

Take into account how you learn, and how much life is going to serve as a distraction from your learning. From there, you will have a better idea on what kind of training will serve you best.

3. Look into How They Teach Anatomy:

This is a big one. Make sure that your yoga teacher training program has a strong anatomy section. I would even suggest that you do some research on what the instructor of the program you are looking into has to teach that section.

Anatomy may not seem like the biggest deal when you are in the middle of trying to memorize all the Sanskrit names for postures or figuring out how to sequence properly.

Still, a solid understanding of human anatomy will not only transform your own practice into one that is ideal for your specific body, it will also enable you to bring so much more consciousness to your teaching in public and private classes.

Knowing your anatomy is going to pay off big time in the long run, so make sure it is really emphasized in your program.

4. Study the Program’s History:

Do some research into the history of the company with whom you are considering doing your training.

There are some companies that have been around forever, doing teacher trainings for years, and that have extensive experience delivering very strong programs.

It is not all that difficult to put a teacher training program together, however, and just because a program is certified by the Yoga Alliance, does not mean it is top quality.

Unless you have a ‘home’ studio that you know and trust through which you are doing your training, do a thorough background check on the company. Read reviews, talk to people who have been through the program, and get very familiar with your studio of choice.

5. Evaluate the Course Syllabus for Balance of Subjects Taught:

This is my favorite tip—each Yoga TTC is required a minimum number of hours dedicated to things like posture labs, anatomy, history, and philosophy—but each teacher training is going to emphasize different areas, and bring their own style to their program.

If you are really into the nuts and bolts of yoga asana, then a spiritually-focused program most likely isn’t for you. Likewise, if discussing the Yoga Sutras at length turns you on, then a super anatomy-focused program may make you feel less than interested.

Study the curriculum and ask about how many hours are dedicated to each topic if it is not advertised. Pick a program that speaks your language.

6. Do Research on The Instructors:

Lastly, check up on the teacher trainers with whom you are thinking of studying. Look at how long they have been teaching, how long they have been doing teacher training, and even at who trained them. This information is useful for deciding if you want to work with them or not.

I am not saying not to do your training with a teacher that does not have thousands of years of teacher experience—some of the best teachers I have ever worked with have been relatively new—I am simply suggesting you get an idea and feel for your instructors.

Take some public classes with the teachers who will be on your teacher training faculty as well. Make sure you enjoy their teaching style and connect with them.

So what do you think? Do any of these tips make choosing your program seem less overwhelming? If you have done your training, is there anything you would add to this list?

Swami Rama Meditation Best Yoga teacher training in Rishikesh

A Myth shattered by Swami Rama or scientific proof of yogis abilities

admin

Swami Rama has shattered the myth of western science about restrictions of human Physiology. In the year 1970 under the supervision of scientists from the clinic of Menninger in Topeka (Kansas) he demonstrated that he is able to control his autonomic nervous system. And this according to Physiology, people can not do. Read further about scientific proof of yogis abilities.

Elmer E. and Alice M. Green, as well as E. Dale Walter, reported that Swami Rama has caused a gradual change in the temperature of two parts of his skin on one palm, located at a distance of about two inches apart. Temperature change happened in opposite directions (with a speed about 4 degrees Fahrenheit per minute). Until the skin temperature difference reached about 10 degrees Fahrenheit. One part of his palm had turned red from the heat, and the other had ash-gray from the cold.

Experiment of Swami Rama

In another experiment, Swami Rama raised the heart rate by an effort of will, from 70 to 300 beats per minute. His heartbeat turned into a vibration in which the heart was no longer pumping blood in a normal rhythmic manner. He also could stop his heartbeat at least for 17 seconds.

Swami Satyananda Saraswati describes how in 1977 in the “Brain & Behavior Research Institute” in Kansas , USA an observational research of a yogi’s brain. It has been conducted while Swami Rama was engaged in relaxation and gradually entered into a deeper state of consciousness. Dr. Elmer Green directed scientific research. And electroencephalogram machine recorded the bio-currents of the brain. Subsequently, the world learned about this scientific discovery.

Scientists have documented that with one strong-willed effort the yogi entered different states of consciousness alternately. And it is when he fully relaxed his body. He had entered the state of Yoga-Nidra and the device registered a 70% alpha wave is a 5-minute period. That time he was visualizing a blue sky with rare floating clouds.

Then the yogi went into a dream state that was followed for 5 minutes, with mostly theta waves for 75%. Later Swami Rama said that this condition was uncomfortable, he called it “noisy and unpleasant”. He further added that he was able to eliminate it by moving his consciousness into the subconscious”. Here he gained an experience of certain desires in the contemplation of archetypal images, which tried to possess his mind.

State of deep sleep

Finally, Swami entered the state of deep sleep /unconscious mind/. And the slow vibrations of the Delta waves confirmed it. However, his consciousness remained alert throughout the scientific experiment. For example, he easily recalled the various events that took place in the science lab and associated with the experiment. And, for example, after the experiment, Swami Rama has voiced the questions that one of the scientists asked the yogi in the period of increasing the Delta waves. The presence of Delta waves indicates the deep sleep state. And it would seem that yogi could not perceive these issues…

Scientists did not have the opportunity to carry out such studies before. When the deep sleep state could be combined with the awareness of the present moment. This clearly showed that scientists are faced with the Grand opening of the Turiya. And it is so persistently described in the ancient texts of yoga, WHICH DOES EXIST, as evidenced by the fact, not the phenomenon of faith. Can you believe that scientific proof of yogis abilities is exist?

Nature of the super-conscious

Scientists are personally convinced that the nature of the super-conscious does really include all possible States of consciousness: wakefulness and superficial sleep and dream. In other words, the simultaneous interaction of consciousness, subconsciousness, and unconsciousness is possible.

Thus, the maximum relaxation of all mental and psycho-physical processes in the body invariably leads to the integration of consciousness as such, and to the enlightenment of the individual. Essentially, people who have reached this state – DO NOT SLEEP. They know only a state of being, which is unchanging, regardless of whether it was a dream or wakefulness. They are constantly in a state of Turiya in yoga Nidra.

It became clear that the so-called “universal mind” or “consciousness” can be gradually developed and strengthened through such efficient technologies as yoga-Nidra and meditation. So the mysterious and impenetrable world of unconscious is losing ground and is now defined as the super-consciousness. This gradual process of enlightenment of the individual and liberation from the yoke of the “mysterious” forces and is called self-realization, Kaivalya, Moksha or Samadhi.

Of course, the demonstration of such “miracles” is not the goal of yogis. It is a way to convey to the industrial society that each one of us possess an enormous inner power that is wasted on utter nonsense. And it was a scientific proof of yogis abilities.

Most yoga teachers in our yoga school are studied under the guidance of this tradition in Swami Rama ashram in Rishikesh.

Through practice and dedication, her strength and flexibility have impressively increased. The yogi often shares photos and videos of herself doing poses on her Instagram.

In March 2016, she wrote, “Gotta do yoga not for my body but for my mind! DO YOGA or GO CRAZY!”

She claims that she does yoga not for her body but for her mind.

Yoga is a practice that will test the practitioner both physically and mentally. True to Miley’s testament, most practitioners believe that the real surrender in yoga is a mental, rather than physical, obstacle.

Cyrus’ latest snap of her practicing yoga is pretty inspiring. Sporting her new, fully bleached blonde ‘do, Cyrus nails Kukkutasana pose. It’s part of the Ashtanga yoga series, and it’s a pretty tough pose. It requires lots of arm and core strength to lift your legs off the ground, as Cyrus demonstrates. She makes it look easy.

Why One Should Do Hatha Yoga?

admin

Hatha Yoga is a preparatory process of yoga. Hatha is combination of two words ‘Ha’ means ‘sun’ and ‘Tha’ means  . Hatha yoga is about balancing the sun energy and the moon energy in you. You can explore Hatha yoga in ways that take you beyond certain limitations, but fundamentally, it is a physical preparation – preparing the body for a higher possibility.

In our body both of the sun and the moon energy is present. When these energies are balanced, we experience peace and harmony of the mind and our lives. When these energies are imbalanced, it leads to disturbances and discord, agitation, un-satisfaction and disharmony in life. Hatha Yoga is a yogic art to balance the energy of sun and moon, so that your body is in equilibrium and you feel peace & harmony. The energy of the sun effects Sympathetic Nervous System while the energy of moon effects Para-Sympathetic Nervous System.

In hatha yoga, there are stimulation asanas for example Surya Namaskar, etc. and relaxations asanas. These stimulation asanas helps in balancing the energy of sun while these relaxation asanas helps in balancing the energy of moon. The energy of sun is the life energy, the energy which drives us and makes us do work or activity while the energy of moon is the mental or cosmic energy which gives us mental thinking, intelligence and mental power.

So how these energies affect us? Well we can take children as an example- they are always hyperactive, often easily distracted as they have strong sun energy (life force) but less moon energy (mental force). When we look at elderly people, they are much less active as the energy of moon is dominant.

Hatha Yoga balances both energies, so that one can always be focused, active and mentally strong. The people who always gets distracted in life or unable to set their goals about life, should learn and practice Hatha Yoga.

—– Written by One of Our Students who works at Cloudera. We share his personal experience with us and hatha Yoga and what he had learn here.

” Once a time, I was also distracted, I drop out from my college, wasted my precious 5 years and created problems for many people including my family and myself. The Universe has some plans, I landed at Akshi Yogashala in Rishikesh, came here to learn Yoga under 200 Hrs TTC program ( Never to be a teacher  ) and stayed for additional 3 months to deepen the practice but also to get focused for the life. The Yoga has changed me. Now I am working in Computer Vision and Robotics section at Cloudera. I learned most of the things, but Hatha Yoga has special place in my heart. I recommend that everyone should learn and practice Yoga. You can join Akshi Yogashala or any Yoga Teaching Center of Rishikesh – The Yoga Capital or any place. But Yes One should learn & practice Yoga.

Five Things You Did Not Know About Teaching Yoga

admin

A Yoga Teacher is a learner as well, an educator who is always striving for more knowledge and gaining new skills to bring improvements in his curriculum and impart better lessons. He goes beyond the conventional ways to add versatility to his existing format and bring something new and refreshing in his lesson. He is not only an educationist but also a guide and a counselor who can nurture his student’s inherent capabilities to make them capable enough to become a good teacher and a better human being.

However following are the few tips that can help the teacher to add value to an existing format of teaching:

Start the Class with Savasana

Generally, Savasana is done towards the middle or the end of the session, but if it is performed in the beginning, it can be very beneficial for the students who come to attend the session after their hectic schedule, so they are tired. Few minutes of Savasana can be very relaxing and can mentally prepare them to perform the poses.

Give Time for Meditation

Avoid starting the session with heavy poses. If you see students are drained, motivate them to sit with their eyes closed and meditate for few minutes. Teach them some meditation techniques, which would cool their mind and make them more at ease and then start the session but with lighter poses.

Modify the Poses

Many students attends yoga with a history of illness or a physical injury, or they might be currently suffering from any illness or pain, so it is highly suggested to modify the poses that suit their physical needs. The main skill lies in making space for them so that they feel comfortable in performing poses. If you feel breaking down the sequences will be more beneficial for the students, do it.

Teach Variations in Poses

If a student finds difficulty in performing a pose, provide a variation and teach how to perform it well. Demonstrate the variation and show how easy it would be if it is performed in a slightly modified way. The customized variation technique would make students feel comfortable in performing the asana.

Show Positive Attitude

Start your class with a positive note, an anecdote or a small story. These few words can fill the students with enthusiasm to perform their best.

The true skill of Yoga Master lies in on how well they teach the poses through modifications and necessary adjustments. Besides, Yoga teacher always tries to create an emotional connection with the students to understand them well. And a feeling of happiness and satisfaction, which they get after the class, cannot be described in words.

Difference Between Ashtanga and Vinyasa Flow

admin

One common misconception is in yoga exists between Ashtanga Vinyasa and Vinyasa, two of the most popular styles today. With a little reading, and an open heart, the differences will become clear.

Similarities

Both styles arise from the Krishnamacharya Yoga lineage, and both highlight breath-centered movement. Movement and breath align and poses will not be held for more than five counts. The similarities stop there, thought while the differences fall into three categories: sequence, asanas, asymmetrical shifts, and teaching style.

Both Ashtanga and Vinyasa employ a three-pose transition, called a “Vinyasa,” which includes Chatturanga, Upward-Facing Dog, and Downward-Facing Dog. This is where the confusion begins. Vinyasa is simply another word for transition.

So when we hear Ashtanga Vinyasa, we should think of the transitions between movements in a series or sequence. When we hear Vinyasa, we should be aware that this is a separate style of Yoga altogether.

Sequence

Ashtanga Yoga entails of three series of postures: primary, secondary, and advanced. The series are in a particular order. Before moving onto the next phase, each series must be mastered and memorized. The predefined order of postures (asanas) that students practice the same way, every time. There is no variation here, ever. There may be modifications, but the practice will always look the same, no matter what.

Vinyasa class sequences vary from teacher and practitioner. There is no set series of movements. The practice itself is almost a free flow, hence the commonly used term Vinyasa Flow. Each practice can appear entirely different than the previous or preceding one. And this change based on the teacher and the practitioner.

Asanas

Ashtanga foundations are based on a set category of asanas. The primary series centers on forward bends. The secondary series focuses on back bends. And the advanced series emphasizes arm-support and arm-balancing poses. During the progression, the postures become more increasingly more complex.

Vinyasa Yoga sequences often highlight challenging poses. Referred to as peak poses, the teacher selects poses for a particular practice or objective. During the class, the teacher guides students through a sequence of postures as preparation for the peak pose. Recovery poses are also incorporated.

Asymmetrical Shifts

Ashtanga performs an asymmetrical pose on the right side, moves through a Vinyasa, and then repeats the pose on the left side.

Vinyasa Yoga, several asymmetrical poses are done together before performing the Vinyasa and switching to the other leg.

Teaching Style

Ashtanga has a unique version of teaching. It is teacher-led, but the primary focus is on student autonomy. The method is called “Mysore” which means self-led. Mysore style utilizes memorized Ashtanga sequences. Each student moves according to the appropriate rhythm and level for the practice. During this time, teachers monitor the students and provide individual adjustments and instruction, as needed.

Vinyasa Yoga is teacher-led in a traditional sense. Vinyasa classes are lead by a teacher who offers instruction, cues from start to finish, and tips for each pose. The teacher guides the class as an entire unit, then offers some personalized adjustments.

Benefits of yoga nidra Best Yoga teacher training in Rishikesh

Why Yoga Nidra over any other meditation?

admin

With mental stress, tensions, insomnia and other contemporary problems on the hike, mediation seem to be the only permanent respite. The question here is not ‘should I be meditating?’but, which meditation should I be doing? Ajjapa Jappa, Antar Mouna, Inner Peace, one pointed meditation, mantra meditation, the list is endless. All of these meditations offer great results. But when we are looking for outcomes that start with immediate effect. Our go to meditation would be Yoga Nidra or Yogic Sleep. Let’s check what is the benefits of Yoga Nidra.

Sages have used the yogic sleep meditation for years to reach the deepest level of the consciousness and visit the inner sanctuary. In a waking state, our brain is producing faster beta waves but with Yoga Nidra, the brain activity drops down & relaxes with the help of progressive relaxation technique. Slow Alpha waves along with slower theta waves are released as the mind approaches the jurisdiction of the subconscious mind. The switch over from the left to right part of the brain is effortless & intentions flow with spontaneity. Even the sympathetic and parasympathetic system is balanced and what we experience can be rightly termed as bliss.

Transcending the linear understanding of logic, intellect, practicality, the art of yogic sleep journeys on the basis of trust, faith, love, tranquility, & compassion. Here are some points for us to be relate to Yogic Nidra above other meditation techniques:

Easy to Do

Sitting for hours on the floor, waiting for liberation to manifest can be challenging at times. The journey to the inner peace can be misleading, but meditation asks us to wear our most comfortable suit. Yogic Sleep unlike the vinyasa flow classes does not require any skill. Meanwhile, the practitioner can simply lie down and play the audio/request the teacher to instruct. And then swim deeper into the world of oneness, possibilities and freedom. By connecting the chords of the subconscious & pranic intelligence to the conscious self, a new sense of harmony can be experienced easily.

No Right Way

Swami Satyananda Sarawati ji mentioned in his book, Yoga Nidra, “Whether you hear your teacher’s instructions or not does not matter. Even if you are dreaming of something else, the suggestions made by the teacher are still going to work on the subconscious mind.” Yes, there is nothing wrong you can do, while you are practicing this ancient science. Lying down in shavasana, and just being aware of what is happening inside the mind is enough to take you through. If the practitioner falls asleep, the process will still work. The subconscious mind does not need mental awareness to do the work we give it at the beginning of the meditation.

Highly Beneficial in No Time

A catalyst in the journey to the deepest recesses of the mind, with benefits of Yoga Nidra one can expect to release entrapped emotions. Meet their fears and eliminate them to restructure and reform a whole new personality. The emotions weighing down the vital energy have kidnapped & chained our freedom through past life karma, karmic seeds, anger, fear, attachment, jealousy, hatred, etc. In addition these emotions & karmic seeds can be destroyed to experience a state of bliss. “Like the mythological phoenix, with every session we are burning the old samskaras, habits and tendencies”. It said by Swami Satyananda Sarawati ji in his book, Yoga Nidra.

Self-Revelation

By temporarily disconnected ourselves from the reality we have formed around us, based on our belief systems, societal pressure, expectations & past life impressions. We are reconnected to the true reality, our true nature through this meditation where we are whole, complete & powerful. Therefore, all blocks, fears and fears are washed away to promote spiritual awareness and understanding of who we really are. The power within us, the power with the ability to heal itself, grow and endless possibilities, becomes available. We can face a mirror that reflects your image devoid of self-doubt.

A Daily Routine

Yoga Nidra practice is not based on the concept of time. Based on the amount of hours or minutes we can spare in our day. You can customize and easily fit it in any bag. Therefore, the guided voice helps us follow through, unlike other meditations. For instance, in one pointed meditation, we are trying to focus on a blank wall. While other thoughts barge in to create obstacles. In case of Yoga Nidra, we can plug in the headphones or visit the meditation class, to loose into the trance present inside us. Ready to escape the current reality and reach out to the world of wellness and harmony.

A master path towards liberation, & unlocking great potential of the self, Yoga Nidra is a sleep with awareness. It is a sleep that is more powerful than wakefulness & consciousness. Swami Satyananda Saraswati ji says, “ One hour of Yoga Nidra is equivalent to 4–5 hours of normal sleep” Following his words, it is ideal to say, when we have the key to the reservoir of knowledge then why not tap into it and uncover the power of subconscious.

Please feel free to join our yoga training course to experience benefits of Yoga Nidra and other meditations.
